ROUND TABLE DISCUSSION

MONOPHONICS - Psychedelic Soul & Funk from San Francisco (Sunday 2.12 w/ Nefarious Jones)

LETTER FROM THE BAND:

We want to take this chance to welcome you to our new website and update everyone on what’s going on and coming up!

This November we will be journeying to the Mid-West for a 19 city tour and playing new material in new cities like Chicago, Detroit, Kansas City, St. Louis, Des Moines, Cincinnati and Boise while returning to fun places like Wichita, Denver, Lincoln and Salt Lake City!

We just recently completed mixing our new record “In Your Brain”. It was recorded by our very own Ian McDonald and Kelly Finnigan in San Francisco and was mixed by our good friend Sergio Rios from ORGONE at Killion Sound in LA. With a transformation of the group in the last 18 months, we have matured and found our own sound. This new record sits on the fuzzy psychedelic side of Soul and Funk! Taking a cue from our San Francisco roots and greats like Norman Whitfield, George Clinton’s Funkadelic, David Axelrod and Sly Stone we have found our music has taken on a direction that focuses on great tones using analog equipment, a simpler and more spontaneous songwriting approach and trying to always catch a vibe that brings back thoughts of the 1969 psychedelic movement!

At the moment we are also working on some big things concerning shows on the west coast, an east coast tour in 2012 and other exciting things so we will keep you up to date as things progress…till next time people!

OCOTE SOUL SOUND

Let soulful chords and guitar fuzz inch into your space with this resplendent mix of yesterday's Latin beats and tomorrow's sounds, as Adrian Quesada of Grupo Fantasma and Martín Perna of Antibalas have teamed up once again for another album from their band known as Ocote Soul SoundsTaurus is out now.

The first taste is always free and your "Pirata" download comes courtesy of ESL, the mothership of Thievery Corporation and many other satisfying ensembles:

The group teamed up in 2005 with "El Nino Y El Sol" and within a six-year span, the musical soulmates have evolved into a seven-piece ensemble with a total of four albums, all of which have gorgeous textures of sound and audible Persian rugs, with beautiful variations from song to song.

Taurus brings to you cinematic orchestra stylings, psychedelic Afro-Latin funk grooves, and Latin breakbeat rhythms that at times make you feel like you're at the coolest 3 a.m. party, and at others times like you're floating in the middle of a Mexican desert.

And, there's a message. While America continues to eat its young, Martín channels Gil Scott Heron, rhythmically reminding us to "Speak Truth To Power," and of the dangers of being placated by big money sports. Ocote has always been about more than sounds. It's been about using music as a catalyst that sows discourse rather than discord.

June is Black Music Month and a good time to buy Taurus. Respect music, its legacy and promise.

These cuts are ripe for DJs everywhere to sample:
1. "Primavera"
2. "Pirata"
3. "En El Temblor"
4. "Pathways"
5. "STTP (Speak Truth To Power)"
6. "Cumbia La Magdalena"
7. "Pan y Circo"
8. "Agua Santa"
9. "Tumba del Payaso"
10. "Contigo ames"
11. "Nessuno"
12. "Guantanamo"

Lions of Israel, Inc. Announces the "Be Not Dismayed/Soul Liberation Tour"

Featuring: Joseph Israel & Toussaint Yeshua

For immediate release: November 2011. Spiritual singer/songwriter Joseph Israel and The Jerusalem Band have joined forces with soul singer Toussaint Yeshua for a November tour with shows in Washington, Oregon, and California.
This is an amazing combination of spiritual soul music for all to enjoy. Toussaint-who was one of the main artists at this year's North West Reggae Fest in Marcola, Oregon- has been working on many new songs and touring the east coast. Toussaint says he is "looking forward to return to the northwest and California with Joseph Israel on this tour. We have been talking about this for years."
"Yes," notes Israel. "This has been a vision we have had since around 2005, so I am glad to get this chance to collaborate together on this tour. What is going to set this apart from most tours is that we both will share the stage, and work together going in and out of each others songs. Supporting each others music and making one joyful vibration." Israel and Toussaint have recently coacted on a new song called "Storm" to be featured on Israel's second full length CD "Kingdom Road" to be released in 2012. Israel and The Jerusalem Band will be playing songs from the new release '"Be Not Dismayed EP", "Gone Are the Days" and some unreleased music. Also look for Toussaint to play many of his hits from the 2010 CD "Black Gold" that came out on I Grade Records, and much more. This tour will touch on major west coast cities from Seattle,Washington, Portland,Oregon and San Diego, California. If you love Spiritual Roots reggae and soul music, you will not want to miss these shows!

Joseph Israel, born Joseph M. Fennel, is one of those unique individuals whose natural talents and spiritual calling have merged into a music that is as thought provoking as it is inspiring. "What I share with my audience is to draw everyone closer to the source of truth–that we are all brothers and sisters and that division and lies cannot stand." The name "Israel" is a reflection that defines Joseph's striving for the blessings of the Almighty Yahweh. This is the name intended for all peoples, tribes and tongues that love the Most High and love their neighbor. These are the teachings of Yahshua the messiah.  We are all one family. Joseph Israel's debut album was "Gone Are the Days". The album was self-produced and financed, and was recorded at Tuff Gong Studios in the heart of Kingston, Jamaica. Its lyrics are of headline-torn news reports, and are a call for spiritual awakening. In 2006 Joseph Israel was signed to New Door Records of Universal Music Group, and in 2007 "Gone Are the Days" reached #11 on the Top Reggae album charts.
In 2008 Israel released download-only EP "Teach Your Children" for the non-profit organization founded by his sister Sarah Fennel, Restore Humanity. "It was a lot of fun to make," says Joseph. "I was able to record some great songs, while helping to bring awareness to the Restore Humanity organization."

Toussaint Yeshua (AKA "The Liberator") With a husky tenor that is the epitome of soul, and with musical influences that range from roots reggae to gospel to neosoul to hip hop, Toussaint carries a sound that is true to his nickname, “the Liberator”. Yet Toussaint remains firmly grounded by his foundational pillars of soul and roots. As a “soul roots” singer unlike any other, and with an epic debut album on tap, Toussaint is poised to break new ground worldwide. Recently, Toussaint linked up with I Grade Records out of St. Croix, USVI. I Grade-and independent roots reggae label renowned for its crucial albums with the roots sensations Midnite, Dezarie, Niyorah, and other-produces hard hitting live instrumentation roots in a style that is both classic and cutting edge. This sound has aligned mystically and perfectly with Toussaint's powerfully soulful coals and deeply creative songwriting. The first fruits of this collaboration will be a full-length album due out in June 2010. Grounded in roots and drenched in soul, Toussaint the Liberator is poised to bring his music and message

Singer Van Hunt is excited about the release this week of his new album, "What Were You Hoping For?" — his first since "On the Jungle Floor" in 2006. But, he says, "I never know how people will react to these crazy thoughts I have."

Crazy, such as on "Cross Dresser," on which Hunt adorns himself with a few items of feminine clothing that belonged to a former flame as a way to stay close to her.

"It's the first song I wrote when I sat down and needed tunes for this record," he says. "I wrote it in 20 minutes, which rarely happens to me. It usually takes a long time, but it came out easily. I just thought it was funny, which is a winning characteristic for me."

But "Cross Dresser," which sounds like vintage Prince, may be a stretch for some Van Hunt fans.

King Yellowman - From rags to records

HE WAS deserted by his parents, scorned at stage shows,, chased away by producers, banned from the airwaves and developed skin cancer. A doctor even told him he would live only three years more.

That was in 1983.

Not many could overcome all these odds to become one of dancehall's greatest icons, but King Yellowman did. With an unmistakable deejaying style, he fused his pain and longings with his talent, which seemed a perfect recipe to produce hits.

"I remember they used to discriminate against me in the dancehall, because on a show we used to pass mic to mic and whenever me pass the mic, dem either take it and put dem rag over the mic or them kerchief. I guess you couldah call it scorn," Yellowman said.
